Mzaza -
Presented by Music By the Sea
The show will feature
extended stopovers in traditional Balkan villages, bars where Turkish
musicians stop for a raki (aniseed drink), and towns where gypsy street
bands capture your heart. The audience should expect to be treated to
Mzaza’s distinctive yet subtle twist: French vocals on a Bulgarian rhythm
served just after a traditional Spanish love song. The band’s new material
promises to get the party started without leaving behind Mzaza’s attention
to detail and love of soulful traditional music. The six-piece’s unusual
take on Mediterranean music has been turning heads for a while locally, but
it was the release of their latest album Journey Over Skin in 2011 which saw
the band gain exposure around the country and overseas. The album earned
Mzaza two high commendations in the Queensland Music Awards and has been
receiving spins on national radio and on the Greek airwaves. The band’s
outrageous multi-instrumentalists play violin, kamanche tarhu (a
spike-fiddle of Persian ancestry), guitar, accordion, kaval and ney
(Balkan and Turkish end-blown flutes),
double-bass, darabuka (Turkish
percussion), cajon and bendir (frame drum). Tickets at the door - $25/$20

Chopin &
Mendelssohn Octet - Presented by ACO
Brisbane - QPAC Concert Hall, Brisbane
PAGANINI
(arr. Tognetti) Caprice on Caprices, MORRICONE Exercises I: Adagio, CHOPIN
(arr. Hofman) Piano Concerto No.1, GÓRECKI Piano Concerto MENDELSSOHN Octet
Richard Tognetti Artistic Director and Lead Violin Polina Leschenko Piano
Combining sparkling virtuosity with tender lyricism, Chopin’s First Piano
Concerto is an ideal vehicle for the unique talents of Polina Leschenko.
Although Górecki is best known for his haunting and heartfelt Symphony of
Sorrowful Songs, his Piano Concerto bristles with driving rhythms and
energy. Mendelssohn’s Octet is a staple of the ACO’s repertoire, its
carefree exuberance belying its fiendish technical intricacies.
The tonal riches of the ACO’s three legendary violins – Stradivari,
Guarneri and Guadagnini – are revealed in Richard Tognetti’s specially
created arrangement of Paganini’s dazzling Caprices.
The Australian Chamber Orchestra’s next Brisbane concert features a
demonstration of the ACO’s Stradivarius, Guarneri and Guadagnini violins.
Richard Tognetti, Helena Rathbone and Satu Vänskä will perform a new
arrangement of Paganini Caprices specially designed to show off their
violins’ qualities. Monday 13 February at QPAC. Book at
aco.com.au.

Towards Light
- Presented by Australian String Quartet
Conservatorium Theatre, Griffith University, South Bank, Brisbane
Peter Sculthorpe,
String Quartet No 11 Dvořák, String Quartet No 10 in E flat major, Op 51
Shostakovich, String Quintet Op 57 with Daniel de Borah, piano.
The season begins with a work by the doyen of Australian composers,
Peter Sculthorpe, one of many compositions inspired by the starkly beautiful
landscape of Kakadu and its inhabitants. From Australia’s unique interior to
the sunlit uplands of old Bohemia: Few composers wrote music in all genres
which radiated such spontaneous warmth and charm as Antonin Dvořák. Even by
his exalted standards, the Op 51 String quartet is full of gorgeous melodies
where exuberance is masterfully fused with poignant tenderness. The program
culminates with one of Dmitri Shostakovich’s towering chamber masterpieces:
the Piano Quintet, op.57, composed during the fateful year 1940 and
described as “a last ray of hope” for Russia. It is a work of grand
symphonic proportions combining the composer’s hallmark skittish humour and
austere dignity with an underlying tension. Presented in association with
the 2012 Adelaide Festival.
