I am an Expert Violin Maker and Restorer based in Brisbane, Australia.
§
My name is Olaf Grawert.

I set up The Violin Studio as a place for musicians.  Here I will work together with musicians to set up their instrument to really suit their needs.  I specialize in the restoration and tone improvement of old violins, violas, cellos and double basses.  I also specialize in creating optimal acoustics and playability in old and new instruments. I purposely  set up The Violin Studio as a 'by appointment' violin shop, because there are plenty of walk in shops around and it is important to me that I can give you the time you deserve. For buying parts, accessories, bows and instruments, there is also the online violin shop. That way I have time for instrument making, restorations and repairs.

                                                            §

I use the most up to date restoration techniques that will always seek to preserve as much of the original as possible and I try to always keep informed in the latest techniques, so I can do the work in the best possible way for the instrument and the musician.
In the Studio I produce violins, violas and cellos that have tonal qualities required for performance at the highest level.  This is archived by combine the age-old tradition of Lutherie with new studies into the acoustics of the string family (using research by the Grawert Family and some famous German makers).  This enables me to use some of the same techniques that were used by the famous 17th and 18th Century Italian Masters.

Since a very young age, I  spent a lot of time in my fathers violin shop first in Hamburg, and later in Rotenburg (Wümme), Germany.  When I was 8, I began learning the violin under Toscho Matov, a second generation Leopold Auer Student.  It was a rigorous and disciplined training and it taught me a lot about the importance of a good posture.  In 1980 my whole family migrated to Australia, settling in Brisbane.  After finishing high school in 1985, I started learning Violinmaking from my father Helge Grawert (German Master Degree in Violinmaking).  I completed my training and later went into partnership with Helge.

Olaf Grawert restoring a fine Violin

In 1990 I received a Queen Elizabeth II Scholarship to further my training and went to Geigenbau Machold in Germany to study the latest restoration techniques of fine instruments.  It was a wonderful experience which I still treasure. I worked with some of the worlds finest restorers and got to see and work on many fine antique Instruments.  In Australia, I am well known for restorations I performed on valuable old Instruments.  I love the challenge of restoring instruments in any condition so that you cannot see a single repair.  I also love to spend time perfecting the sound of an Instrument.

§

I hope I can be of assistance to you.  I will always endeavor to find out your needs and  set up your instrument to suit your unique playing style and your individual built. I  also offer next day Bridges, Soundposts, Bow Rehairs and simple repairs (usually within 24hrs), because I am aware how important your Instrument is to you.
I look forward to providing you with the highest standard of quality and service.
